RECENT WORK
NEW VOICE-OVERS
Here's a tv commercial for Bridgestone tires. They wanted "less American". I gave it to them.
Would you buy a used car from this man?
I am an American who has been living in Holland for 28 years. I mainly direct and produce for television and film. I also write, do
voice-overs, and present and act from time to time. I'm
looking for new challenges - ways to make a living
and to make a difference. More.
WHAT I DO
I work with organizations to produce films that make people think. I consult, script, direct and produce. I'm surrounded by creative professionals who do the rest: camera, sound, editing, etc., and together we get the film made. I'm focused on processes, communication, relationships - and how this effects the people working in an organization and how that, in turn, effects the rest of the world. The bigger picture.
CREATIVE ENTREPRENEURS & CHANGE
Since my personal renaissance (see "The New Me," right) I have been scouring the internet for ways to do good and to make some money. I have noticed that things seem to be changing. New ideas abound in which the borders between business, design, art, social development and innovation are fading. Collaborative Fund, for example, says it aims to be the "leading source of capital and strategic support for creative entrepreneurs who want to change the world." One of its series of articles runs on Fast Company's Fast Co.exist site, and is written by "thought leaders in the for-profit, for-good business space." My old neighbor in Philadelphia, Bill Harrington, has started a blog called Money Spent Well. Maybe I'm just waking up, but this all seems very revolutionary to me, and very exciting. I've spent the last few years struggling to make documentaries and get them on TV. So that they can be watched by a few like-minded people on late-night slots. This suddenly feels like an odd way to spend one's time. There's so much work to be done.
This year's forestry department campaign featured Wibo. Job Kraaijeveld did camera.
Xander Bruins designed and edited.
I have a sense that many of us want a straightforward life where creativity, honesty, responsibility and love are more than elusive ideals. We realize that we need to take better care of each other and ourselves, because soon we will have no choice. We've learned that we shouldn't borrow so much. That we should give more than we take. To accomplish this it's clear that we can't live by fear. Apparently a lot of people share these ideas. Not just hippies, left-wing rabbis or documentary makers. Even businesspeople.
For a while I thought that corporate films were just a way to make money so you could spend more time earning less for the other, better things you did. But if corporate films are made in the spirit of responsible entrepreneurship, aimed at improving our lives, their impact might actually be greater than that of their "better," poorer cousins. So one of my goals this year is to work with companies to create films that people will benefit from. I also want to tackle form and content clichés that make business films so predictable. I'm not sure if this makes me a creative entrepreneur who wants to change the world or not, but it's a start.
